Attempting to make visual that which cannot be seen...
I live and work in Shetland, Scotland. My inspiration is drawn from the natural environment around me and the life experiences I have, and bear witness to - all feed into the concern of my work.
Drawings and paintings are primarily expressive works using charcoal, inks, chalk, pastels, and mixed-media of both organic material and found objects. My seascapes are generally worked 'en plein air'. Figurative work is drawn from life and photographic and video recordings. I dabble in film, audio recordings and macro photography for fun, feeding my inspirations for developing design work and creative writing and ramblings...
My interests are wide and being trans-non-binary, they include being creatively proactive within the LGBT+ community. I am passionate about environmental and humanitarian concerns. I create art because I am driven by the process rather than to reach an intended outcome. I view my art and photographic work as an on-going visual journey of experience and development.
Crafted items are made using objects of interest found on our bonny shoreline. Drift-wood, and sea-glass pounded by the waves. Pebbles, stones, & ceramics tumbled over decades and offered up by the ebb and flow of the tides... all finding their way into my grateful creative palm.
My bead collection is used to create jewellery and used as a means to gather people together in a therapeutic and creative circle of which I call "The Bead Blanket". I have collected, bought, sold, shared, recycled, swapped and made beads for over 25 years. Many of which I have sourced through fair-trade channels from countries throughout the world. I sell my jewellery and loose beads in the name of "Peeriejulz".
My creative work extends to offering Life Modelling services to a number of organisations or individual artists; including Shetland College UHI and Shetland Arts. Creative Life Drawing & Painting Workshops, featuring a variety of themes, and fortnightly evening Life Drawing Sketch Sessions. I am a full member of RAM - Register of Artists' Models, under my working name of Julz Fletcher.
